ENTSO-E and Europacable publish joint recommendations on how to further improve HVDC cable systems reliability

Well-interconnected electricity grids are vital for Europe to become a sustainable and climate-neutral carbon economy by 2050 in compliance with the Paris Agreement. According to the ENTSO-E Ten Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) 2018, 97% of the total route length of electricity grid infrastructure projects would be covered by High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) land and submarine cable and system technology. It is, therefore, of critical importance for Europe future security of electricity supplies that HVDC cables and systems fulfil the highest reliability requirements at all times. Against this background, ENTSO-E and Europacable have worked together and issued joint recommendations on how to further improve HVDC cable systems reliability.

Welcoming the publication of the joint paper, Raul Gil, Chairman of the Europacable Energy Team stated:

“HVDC cables are a mature, fully available and reliable technology. Statistics show that cable failures are extremely rare but the resultant downtime can be long. Continued cooperation with ENTSO-E on this topic is key for Europacable as the cable industry is committed to further improve both reliability and availability because every fault is one too many!”
