MV & LV AC Cables
Medium and Low Voltage AC Cables – Connecting the point of consumption
Connecting MV and LV to the ultimate point of consumption (up to 36 kV)

Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) cables represent the distribution system, providing the electricity connections that deliver electricity to its ultimate point of consumption: households and businesses.

MV cables up to 36 kV are deployed for the connection of the low voltage network to the primary distribution network. LV cable systems up to 1 kV serve to connect buildings and carry power over short distances of not more than several hundred metres. They are the link connecting high and extra high voltage power lines coming from electricity generation points to the end users. In Europe, around 260 million customers are connected to the European electricity distribution grids today, representing 99% of residential customers and small businesses in Europe.

The modernization of Europe´s distribution grids into what is generally called “Smart Grids” will allow for an increased interconnection between users and providers of electricity. With that, distribution networks will even further increase in significance.

This Europacable paper introduces technical aspects of Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) underground cables deployed in distribution networks.
